TAKE BACK DEMOCRACY

IN YOUR WORKPLACE

WHO WE ORGANIZE:

We are the Office and Professional Employees International Union, or OPEIU for short. Basically, that means we organize workers who consider themselves “professionals.” Office workers? We organize you! Nonprofit employees? Yup, you too! Workers in higher education, healthcare, and IT? Yes, yes, and yes! Below is a list of some of the sectors we organize with:

  • Business/Office Administration

  • Healthcare & Sciences

  • IT (Internet Technology)

  • Financial Services

  • Nonprofits

  • Higher Education

  • Maintenance & Utilities

  • And more!

The Union Difference

Higher Pay

We’ve used our collective power to negotiate for minimum salaries, progressive wage scales, and guaranteed annual raises to ensure we earn a fair return on our work. By negotiating with our employers, union members earn 20 percent higher wages on average.

Better Benefits

Union members have a say in our health insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, and other benefits. We’ve secured better healthcare plans with lower out-of-pocket costs, retirement plans with higher employer contributions, and more time off to balance other responsibilities.

AND MORE!!

With our union, we also have power to tackle a variety of other workplace issues. As a worker, you get to decide how to build your union and what to prioritize. Our members have successfully won contracts with powerful work-from-home policies, severance packages, and more.

Member Testimonies

This is my first time being in a union and it has been a great experience. I leave our union meetings feeling invigorated and empowered ... it’s been incredibly helpful to hear fellow coworkers discuss similar issues I’ve been facing. Knowing that others are in the same boat as me and are ready to fight for change makes me feel less alone. I’m so grateful to be a union member.
— Katie Innis, America's Credit Unions
Our union has successfully fought for better pay and work/life balance and job protections. Also, there are few feelings better than ... being able to save someone’s job when they’re getting blamed for something they weren’t responsible for.
— Geoff Guy, La Casa Norte
In my years as a union employee, the union has helped with:
-bad manager situations
-bad employee situations
-bumping situations
-Layoff situations
-Re-writing my job description and getting it upgraded
-Been there to vent when I needed someone I could trust to talk to
— Kandie Norman, America's Credit Unions
This Local has changed my idea of what worker-led organizing means. I feel so lucky to work for a union that prioritizes the will of the workers and ensures that they are the decision-makers in every step of the unionization process.
— Evan McKenzie, Local 39 Organizer
